In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8870M are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT SLI.

The Radeon HD 8870M was released over three years more recently than the 9800M GT, and so the Radeon HD 8870M is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the 9800M GT when running the latest games.

The Radeon HD 8870M has 1024 MB more video memory than the 9800M GT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the Radeon HD 8870M also has superior memory performance overall.

The 9800M GT has 30.4 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 8870M, which means that the memory performance of the 9800M GT is noticeably better than the Radeon HD 8870M.

The GeForce 9800M GT SLI has 192 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8870M has 640. However, the actual shader performance of the 9800M GT is 96 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 8870M is 496. The Radeon HD 8870M having 400 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon HD 8870M delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the 9800M GT.

The Radeon HD 8870M transistor size technology is 37 nm (nanometers) smaller than the 9800M GT. This means that the Radeon HD 8870M is expected to run much cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the 9800M GT.

The GeForce 9800M GT SLI requires 130 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8870M requires 50 Watts. The 9800M GT requires 80 Watts more than the Radeon HD 8870M to run. The difference is significant enough that the 9800M GT may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Radeon HD 8870M.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewGeForce 9800M GT SLI is a solution of two GeForce 9800M GT put together using NVIDIA'S SLI technology.
Check the page of GeForce 9800M GT to know more about its chip.
As usual, SLI relies a lot on proper driver support and may suffer from micro-stuttering in lower frame rates (below 30). Benchmarks indicate the performance is overall, up to X% better than a single GeForce 9800M GT performing by itself but at times (depending whether or not the 3D game supports SLI or in the graphics driver) it performed worse than a single GeForce 9800M GT.
A few demanding games will run at the highest settings with fluent frame rates (30+) but overall most games will require reduced settings to be played optimally.
Overview
Radeon HD 8870M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the GCN Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN 1.1 Release adds support for AMD's TrueAudio Technology which does calculations of audio effects "better" than the CPU and further improves the Powertune Technology.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Venus XT which has 10 Compute Units activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Operates at 725MHz and goes up to 775MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The memory clock operates at 1125MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 50W, it is suited for 17" or larger laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance on average with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 670M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 8870M.
