In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) are massively better than the AMD Radeon X1800 Series 256MB.

The HD 8740 was released over three years more recently than the X1800 Series, and so the HD 8740 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the X1800 Series when running the latest games.

The HD 8740 has 1792 MB more video memory than the X1800 Series, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the HD 8740 also has superior memory performance overall.

The HD 8740 has 27.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the X1800 Series, which means that the memory performance of the HD 8740 is slightly better than the X1800 Series.

The Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) has 512 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon X1800 Series 256MB has 16. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 8740 is 348 and the actual shader performance of the X1800 Series is 5. The HD 8740 having 343 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 8740 delivers a significantly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the X1800 Series.

The Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) requires 55 Watts to run but there is no entry for the Radeon X1800 Series 256MB. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 8740 and a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the X1800 Series. The X1800 Series has been recommended a PSU with 50 Watts more than the HD 8740. The difference is significant enough that the X1800 Series may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD 8740.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Performance
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i3 Quad Core/AMD FX Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
Radeon X1800 Series 256MB is not a GPU but instead a combination between Radeon X1800 GTO, Radeon X1800 XL and Radeon X1800 XT whose rank is a balance between the three and that exists for System Requirements purposes only.
