In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) are massively better than the Intel HD i5 661.

The HD 8740 was released over three years more recently than the HD i5 661, and so the HD 8740 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the HD i5 661 when running the latest games.

The HD 8740 has 2048 MB video memory, but the HD i5 661 does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.

The HD 8740 has 512 Shader Processing Units but the HD i5 661 does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.

The Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) requires 55 Watts to run and the HD i5 661 requires 87 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 8740. The HD i5 661 requires 32 Watts more than the HD 8740 to run. The difference is significant enough that the HD i5 661 may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD 8740.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Performance
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i3 Quad Core/AMD FX Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
Intel HD i5 661 is a specific version of Intel GMA graphics that is built into the Intel Core i5 661 processor. This can handle most of the latest games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Batman: Arkham City and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on the lowest settings in a pretty good frame rate. Perfect fit for a non-hardcore gamer.
