In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 Galaxy Green Edition are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM).

The GTX 650 has a 258 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the HD 8740. This results in the GTX 650 providing 8.3 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 650 has a 258 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 8740 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the GTX 650 providing 4.1 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 8740 was released over a year more recently than the GTX 650, and so the HD 8740 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTX 650.

The HD 8740 has 1024 MB more video memory than the GTX 650, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, overall, the GTX 650 has superior memory performance.

The GTX 650 has 8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 8740, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 650 is marginally better than the HD 8740.

The Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) has 512 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 650 Galaxy Green Edition has 384. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 8740 is 348 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 650 is 406. The GTX 650 having 58 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 650 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 8740.

The Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) requires 55 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 650 Galaxy Green Edition requires 64 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 8740 and a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the GTX 650. The GTX 650 requires 9 Watts more than the HD 8740 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GTX 650 to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the HD 8740.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Performance
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i3 Quad Core/AMD FX Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
GeForce GTX 650 Galaxy Green Edition is a special edition of the fast-middle-class GeForce GTX 650.
This edition features a custom cooling system which increases the airflow and no overclocking out of the box, despite saying "Factory Overclocked" at the homesite.
Therefore, the performance is on level with the reference card.
