In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7870 PCS+ Vortex II Edition are massively better than the Nvidia GeForce GTS 240.

The HD 7870 has a 475 MHz higher core clock speed and 24 more Texture Mapping Units than the GeForce GTS 240. This results in the HD 7870 providing 54.2 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 7870 has a 475 MHz higher core clock speed and 16 more Render Output Units than the GeForce GTS 240. This results in the HD 7870 providing 26 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 7870 was released over three years more recently than the GeForce GTS 240, and so the HD 7870 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GeForce GTS 240 when running the latest games.

The HD 7870 has 1024 MB more video memory than the GeForce GTS 240, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the HD 7870 also has superior memory performance overall.

The HD 7870 has 89.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce GTS 240, which means that the memory performance of the HD 7870 is much better than the GeForce GTS 240.

The Radeon HD 7870 PCS+ Vortex II Edition has 1280 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTS 240 has 112. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 7870 is 1251 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce GTS 240 is 189. The HD 7870 having 1062 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 7870 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce GTS 240.

The HD 7870 transistor size technology is 27 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GeForce GTS 240. This means that the HD 7870 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GeForce GTS 240.

The GeForce GTS 240 requires 120 Watts to run but there is no entry for the HD 7870. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 7870 and a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the GeForce GTS 240. The HD 7870 has been recommended a PSU with 50 Watts more than the GeForce GTS 240. The difference is significant enough that the HD 7870 may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GeForce GTS 240.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon HD 7870 PCS+ Vortex II Edition is a special edition of Radeon HD 7870.
This is one of today's most powerful editions of the reference as it features increases in both the core and memory clocks that went from 1000MHz to 1150MHz and from 1200MHz to 1250MHz.
Benchmarks indicate the performance boost is quite extreme and around 8% when compared to the reference Radeon HD 7870.
Overview
GeForce GTS 240 is an OEM only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the first revision of the Tesla Architecture.

Architecture
Tesla was NVIDIA's First Unified Shader Architecture.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed G92B which has 7 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 112 Shader Processing Units, 56 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 675MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of GDDR3, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1100MHz.

Features
DirectX 10.0 Support (10.0 Hardware Default) and support for SLI, NVIDIA PureVideo HD Technology, Dual-stream Hardware Acceleration, PhysX, CUDA, HybridPower and other technologies.

Cooling Solution
The Cooling Solution consists of a Single-Fan.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 120W, it requires at least a 450W PSU and it requires at least one 6-pin available connector.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat above a GeForce 9800 GT, meaning it is much faster than GeForc GT 240.
