In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS are significantly better than the Intel GM45 Express Chipset.

The GM45 Express Chipset was released over a year more recently than the GeForce 8600M GS, and so the GM45 Express Chipset is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GeForce 8600M GS.

Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.

The GeForce 8600M GS has 512 MB video memory, but the GM45 Express Chipset does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.

The GM45 Express Chipset has 10 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 8600M GS has 16. However, the actual shader performance of the GM45 Express Chipset is 5 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 8600M GS is 10. The GeForce 8600M GS having 5 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GeForce 8600M GS delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GM45 Express Chipset.

The GM45 Express Chipset requires 12 Watts to run and the GeForce 8600M GS requires 18 Watts. The GeForce 8600M GS requires 6 Watts more than the GM45 Express Chipset to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GeForce 8600M GS to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the GM45 Express Chipset.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewIntel GM45 Express Chipset comes embedded on the Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme, Celeron M CPUS and features an Integrated GPU called GMA X4500HD.
The performance depends on which type of system ram is installed and GM45 supports slow DDR2 or standard DDR3. We will use standard DDR3 for ranking purposes and the memory clock of 533MHz (max supported).
Due to its characteristics (e.g. Shared Memory) the performance is very limited and only very old games or today's non-demanding games can be played with fluent Frame Rates.
GeForce 8600M GS is a middle class level GPU part of the 8000M Series released by NVIDIA, in 2007.
Very demanding games (e.g. Metro 2033, The Witcher 2) are most certainly unplayable and demanding games (e.g. Crysis 2, Skyrim V) might only be playable on the lowest settings. Moderate and less demanding games, like Call of Duty: Black Ops, should be playable smoothly at Medium settings.
