I find this game to be pretty demanding for both CPU and GPU, SSAO and Screen Space Shadows eat tons of frames on large scale battles (especially sieges that are even heavier than the battle benchmark). My cousin and I have to turn them off, and lower Shadow Quality to Medium for playable performance on large siege battles.

Depth of Field and TAA are heavy on some camera angles (looking afar at dead bodies for example), but it reduces FoV (distance) and covers bad draw distance if Tree and Grass quality are lowered (to increase framerate on CPU-bound systems), so Low DoF can be useful if GPU has headroom.

I played about 2000 hrs the original RTW on Ultra unit size (240 men/unit) 1v1 siege with Pentium D (at that time, think of it as today's equivalent of FX6300) so it was alright. I doubt people with FX CPUs can play this without lag on Ultra unit size in sieges in this game.

I don't know how I did it either, I used a very old 15" CRT monitor at the time, coupled with a GT 630, it didn't feel sluggish and laggy at all. Strangely after upgrading to this 2600k and LCD screen, it just doesn't feel the same anymore, with OSD showing sub 30FPS when fully zoomed in epic-sized battles, I don't even know how my old machine handled it so well.
