The Avengers Game Roster: An Opportunity Missed?
Written by: TameGamer - 09:52 Jul-16-2019

Not much was known about Square Enix’s take on Marvel’s highly-popular Avengers until E3 came around and this trailer was dropped. The game, which is seen as a spiritual sequel to Insomniac’s 2018 Spider-Man game, is due to be released in 2020, and the trailer was met with a mixed response. Whilst it was praised for the potential of its storyline and use of not-often-seen villains like Abomination and Taskmaster, the character designs of the Avengers members were criticised for looking like knock-offs from the films. So what could be done to make the Avengers game feel separated from the film but still attract the core, mainstream audience?

New Costumes Required

Whilst the costumes for most of the squad have been altered in some way, they still look very similar to their movie counterparts. Spider-Man was really successful in creating an original Spidey suit, whilst also still making it look faithful to the character. Also in the game are so many options to change the suit to classics from the comic book world and multiple versions of the Spider-Man film. There is a sheer amount of Spider-Man material available at the moment. As well as the game, there have been two recent films (Into the Spider-Verse and Far From Home) and multiple comic books. Sometimes it feels like you could be spending a pretty penny on staying up-to-date, however thanks to voucher codes, you can make savings from a whole host of retailers such as HMV, Zavvi and Argos, meaning staying up to date with everything Marvel doesn’t have to cost.

Overall, there are 38 playable suits including the unique suit they created for the game. That is something that the Avengers game should probably look to replicate, albeit probably not on that scale. Because this title features a roster of characters instead of the solitary Peter Parker in Spider-Man, it will probably be very difficult to create the same number of looks for each Avenger that Spider-Man benefitted from. However, a few changes of costume wouldn’t go amiss, to give variety to the game player and to create something visually new.

Mix Up the Squad

The beauty of the Avengers is that, especially in the comics, the roster is forever changing. As well as Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow and Thor, there have been a whole host of characters who have joined the team, including founder members Hank Pym/Ant-Man and Hope van Dyne/The Wasp. To the game’s credit, it will include Ant-Man, but he was absent in the reveal trailer and a voice artist for him has not yet been announced. Some of the lesser-players in the MCU to date could have been included in the roster such as Quicksilver, Black Panther and Vision, and to get a better female representation, heroines such as Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel could’ve featured.

Because the game isn’t based on the film series at all, they could’ve really deviated from what the movies set up. Due to a film rights rangle, Namor the Sub-Mariner, basically Marvel’s Aquaman (who was created two years before the DC character), has yet to be included in the MCU. But this game would’ve been a perfect opportunity to introduce modern audiences to the underwater dweller. As well as him, other characters we haven’t seen on the big screen include She-Hulk, Tigra and Moon Knight, who could’ve been included to give the Avengers a fresh feel, making it feel separate from the blockbuster series. There are so many to choose from, and it feels like a missed opportunity that the develop decided to stick with the movie line-up.

Be Like the Films

If you can’t beat them, join them. There’s a reason why the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been so successful, and the original roster of Avengers in the Marvel Studios film series are seen as the core to that. By including five of the original six members that featured in Phase 1 of the MCU, it was to be expected that the omission of Clint Barton/Hawkeye would draw questions from the fans as to why he was the only one who missed out. A big hullabaloo was made about the fact that Hawkeye wasn’t featured in the promotional material for 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. The answer for this was eventually answered: because he wasn’t in the film. However, that shows there is a clear want for him to be featured, and if the developers chose to include the other five, they might as well just go the whole hog and introduce the bow-and-arrow-clad Avenger into the squad, mirroring the team in the film series.
